Ensure that the car is level, on firm ground and clear from any passing traffic.
Where fitted, switch on the hazard flashers
Place the transmission models or reverse gear on manual transmission models.
Firmly apply the handbrake
Locate and remove the spare road wheel, jack, jack handle and wheel spanner from the car
When changing a road wheel always chock the road wheel diagonally opposite to the wheel being removed. Ensure that the wheel is chocked at the front and rear of that wheel. NOTE: Before installing the spare road wheel to the car, ensure that it is fully inflated and in a serviceable condition. See below diagram
Where fitted, prise the wheel cover or wheel nut/bolt covers from the wheel, using the bevelled end of the wheel spanner or a suitable tool.
Install the wheel spanner to the wheel nut/bolt in such a manner that the bar end is horizontal and on the left hand side of the wheel. Apply pressure to the end of the spanner in an anti-clockwise direction and slacken the wheel nut/bolt approximately half a turn. Carry out the above procedure on the remaining wheel nuts/bolts. NOTE: On certain cars the wheel nuts/bolts installed to the passenger’s side of the car may have left handed threads. This should be taken into account before attempting to loosen the wheel nuts/bolts.
Install the jack to the relevant and correct jacking point on the car. See diagram below.
Slightly raise the car and check that the jack is still correctly positioned on the jacking point.
Ensuring that the jack is correctly positioned, raise the car so that the road wheel and tyre clears the ground. Allow enough clearance between the tyre and the ground for the spare wheel to be installed.
Unscrew the wheel nuts/bolts and remove the wheel. Where fitted remove the centre wheel cap and transfer it to the spare wheel. See diagram below
Install the spare wheel to the hub and loosely install the wheel nuts/bolts.
Using the wheel spanner secure the wheel nuts/bolts as much as possible
Lower the car to the ground and remove the jack from the car
Using the wheel spanner tighten the wheel nuts/bolts in a diagonal sequence. It will be necessary to repeat the above procedure several times until the wheel nuts/bolts are securely tightened
Fit the wheel cover or wheel nut/bolts covers to the wheel
Remove the chocks from the diagonally opposite wheel
Return the road wheel, jack, jack handle and wheel spanner to their original positions. NOTE: Repair the flat tyre or damaged road wheel as soon as possible and check the tyre pressure on the road wheel just installed.
